You’ll create a personal map through mapping the Three Zones: (1) Hurdles, (2) Safe Spots, (3) Grey Areas

You can then give it an optional title or tag and choose to:

  • Keep it on your map or journal
  • Keep it completely private
  • Or simply leave parts unfinished

There’s no right answer, and you don’t need any art skills. A word, shape, photo, list or unfinished mark all count.

We’ll start with a short welcome and explanation, followed by some quiet thinking time and the main creative activity.

You can work at your own pace. If you prefer to create digitally, you can use a shared PowerPoint as an online creative canvas.

Towards the end, you can choose to share your fragment or look at work that others have chosen to share.

You will never be asked to explain your work or share something personal.

There are different ways to take part. You can:

  • write, draw, collage, type or use images
  • use visual, written or spoken instructions
  • take breaks and work at your own pace
  • take part without speaking in a group
  • keep your camera off if joining online
  • skip, change or stop an activity at any point
  • keep your work completely private

If anything would make the session easier or more comfortable for you, you can let Charlie know when booking.

Do I have to share my story?

No.

You can work quietly, make something just for yourself, observe the activity, or choose not to answer a prompt.

There is no pressure to explain what you create, and other participants will not be asked to interpret or critique your work.

The workshop is part of BITS – Building Identity Through Stories, a PhD research project exploring students’ experiences of starting university, identity and storytelling.

The session is facilitated by Charlie Kwong, Doctoral Researcher, who holds an Enhanced DBS check.

Joining the workshop and taking part in the research are separate choices. Charlie will explain what is part of the workshop and what is part of the research.

Nothing special. Materials will be provided for in-person sessions, or you can use your own notebook, phone, images or other materials.

For the online session, the digital space will be introduced step-by-step.

No art skills. No pressure to share.

Just bring yourself!

Before I Got Here | SB1 2026 | What We’ll Do?

Poster for the BITS “Fresher Storytelling Workshop”. It invites students who have just started university to explore their story so far through a creative activity. Workshop 1, “Before I Got Here”, focuses on students’ backstories and making something from them. Sessions are available online on 26 September, at Woodlane on 7 October, and at Penryn on 8 October. The poster includes a QR code for booking, a £10 grocery gift-card prize draw per session, and contact details for Charlie. The design features handwritten-style blue text, question marks, blue brush marks, and a photo of a seagull.

Starting university can mean bringing lots of things with you — not just your bags.

You’ll create a small story fragment using whatever works for you — words, drawing, collage, images, shapes or something simple on your phone.

You can then give it an optional title or tag and choose to:

  • Carry it forward in the suitcase
  • Set it aside for now in the box
  • Keep it private
  • Or simply leave it unplaced
